Dissertation: Research in Pea Ascochyta Disease (Onderzoekingen over erwtenanthracose).

Notes : Studied botany and zoology at the university of Utrecht, Holland. He receicved his PH.D. in plant pathology in 1932. From 1933 to 1941 he worked mainly in sugar cane dideases and sugar cane agronomy in Santo Domingo and at the famous Pasoeroean institute in Java, Netherlands East Indies. During WW II he, his wife and children were imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp. After the war he returned to Holland and became an assistant professor at the university of Waginingen. After three years he left Holland again and worked in Argentina, Brazil and Cuba. In 1961 when Castro took over Cuba, he moved to Florida, USA. and worked in Belle Glade at the Everglade Experiment Station.

During the funeral ceremony of Cornelis Wehlburg, his son Albert spoke the following words:

"This is really not a sad occasion and I don't
want you to feel sad. It is an end of a good full
life. Let me just tell you a little history about Pap.
He had a good time in college, while he was there
he was chosen to be the president of his rowing
organization, Triton, for two terms in a row. He was part
of the team which won the varsity cup in Holland
and he was the coach for the Dutch rowing team
when they came to the United States in 1932.
He married a good woman and they had two children
of whom he was very proud.
During the war he played an important part .He was
one of the three people who blew up the total oil
and fuel reserve in the island of Java. He being
responsible for destroying one third of it. The
Japanese had expected to use this oil storage
during the war. So maybe pap had a small part in
making the war a little shorted.
In South America, and particularly Cuba he did
some great work in sugar cane. That was the
culmination of his work. That is why I gave you
all a sugar cane leaf. The work which he did on
sugar cane ratoon stunting disease was well know.
He was the foremost authority on it in the world.
People from Australia, Hawaii, Louisiana, and
from South American checked with him. All that
work started in the kitchen of his house.
He had grand children which made him a proud
grandfather.
He lived to see his ninetieth birth day. This was
an important date for him. He even lived to see a
great grand child.
So he had a good life. Do not let these last two
weeks, which were terrible for him, affect the
ninety years of good life.
Do as I do, lay the sugar cane leaf on the coffin
so that he might have that as a remembrance of his
good work on earth, and then we can let him go."
